Scandium has the properties of low relative density (almost equal to aluminum) and high melting point. Scandium nitride (ScN) has a melting point of 2900C and high conductivity, making it widely used in the electronics and radio industries. Scandium is one of the materials for thermonuclear reactors. Scandium can stimulate the phosphorescence of ethane and enhance the blue light of magnesium oxide. Compared with high-pressure mercury lamps, scandium sodium lamps have advantages such as high light efficiency and positive light color, making them suitable for filming movies and plaza lighting. Scandium can be used as an additive for nickel chromium alloys in the metallurgical industry to produce high heat resistant alloys. Scandium is an important raw material for submarine detection plates. The combustion heat of scandium is up to 500C, which can be used in space technology. ScN can be used for radioactive tracking for various purposes. Scandium is sometimes used in medicine.

Scandium mainly comes from scandium vanadium mineral. Tongshi has been developed as a raw material for scandium in countries and regions such as Norway, Madagascar, and Mozambique. Americans have recycled aluminum phosphate ore.

Thortveitite is a rare mineral in nature with limited resources. In China, it is mainly recovered from wolframite, wolframite, wolframite and cassiterite concentrate. Wolframite and cassiterite contain SC2O; Up to 0.4% and 0.2%. For quartz vein and greisen deposit containing wolframite, the content of wolframite series is required to be 0.02%~0.09% in industry. For cassiterite sulfide deposits, industry requires that the scandium content of cassiterite be 0.02%~0.04%
