In 1880, G.de Marignac of Switzerland separated "samarium" into two elements, one of which was confirmed by Solit to be samarium and the other element was confirmed by Bois Baudelaire's research. In 1886, Marignac named this new element gadolinium in honor of the Dutch chemist Ga-do Linium, who was the pioneer in rare earth research for the discoverer of yttrium.will play an important role in modern technological innovation. Mainly manifested in the following points.
(1) Its water-soluble paramagnetic complex can improve the magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging signal of the human body in medical applications.
(2) Its sulfur oxides can be used as matrix grids for special brightness oscilloscope tubes and X-ray fluorescence screens.
(3) Gadolinium in gadolinium gallium garnet is an ideal single substrate for magnetic bubble memory memories.
(4) When there is no Camot cycle limitation, it can be used as a solid-state magnetic cooling medium.
(5) It is used as an inhibitor to control the chain reaction level of nuclear power plant to ensure the safety of nuclear reaction.
(6) Used as an additive for samarium cobalt magnets to ensure that performance does not change with temperature.
In addition, the use of gadolinium oxide with lanthanum helps to change the glass transition zone and improve the thermal stability of the glass. Gadolinium oxide can also be used to manufacture capacitors and X-ray intensifying screens. At present, efforts are being made to develop the application of gadolinium and its alloys in magnetic refrigeration in the world, and breakthroughs have been made. At room temperature, magnetic refrigerators using superconducting magnet, metal gadolinium or its alloys as the cooling medium have come out.
