Scandiumchloridewordt toegepast in optische coating, katalysator, elektronische keramiek en laserindustrie, zijn ook uitstekende voorlopers voor de productie van ultrahoge zuiverheidsverbindingen, katalysatoren en materialen op nanoschaal. De belangrijkste toepassing van scandium per gewicht is in scandium-aluminiumlegeringen voor kleine componenten in de ruimtevaartindustrie. Tandartsen gebruiken erbium, chroom: yttrium-scandium-gallium granaat (ER, CR: YSGG) lasers voor holtebereiding en in endodontie.
